Clout Shooting

Clout Shooting

An additional event popular in the club is shooting at the clout. This was orignally a flag (or 'cloot' to you and me) set at 180 yards for men. From mediaeval times this was the principal form of military archery practice, where the shot must be aimed high in the sky to reach the clout. Each May a clout shoot in Kirkmichael makes for a social occasion at which members shoot for the Cruachan Trophy.

Rules of the Clout

Shooting may be two-way or one-way as safety dictates.

Adults

Adults shall shoot 3 dozen arrows (in lots of 6) at the clout.
The clouts are set at distances of 180 yards (Gents) and 120 yards (Ladies).
The different distances allow ladies and gentlemen to compete together.

Juniors

Juniors (age 12-15 inclusive) shall shoot 2 dozen arrows (in lots of 6) at the clout.
The clouts are set at distances of 120 yards (Gents) and 80 yards (Ladies). The different distances allow ladies and gentlemen to compete together.

Under-12s

Under-12s shall shoot 1 dozen arrows (in lots of 6) as far as possible in a
flight competition (separate boys and girls prizes).

Scoring

A shot within 1 yard of the clout scores 5 points, 2 yards 4 points, 3 yards 3 points, 4 yards 2 points, 5 yards 1 point. There is no extra score for hitting the clout due to the design of the target.

Please follow the instructions of marshalls and scorers at all times.
